About Us

Arcata First Baptist Church is a fellowship of believers with a rich heritage of over 100 years of ministry to Humboldt County and mission outreach to the world. In the shadow of the beautiful Redwood Community Forest, and surrounded by Humboldt State University, we are located in a beautiful and strategic area of Arcata.

Our mission is to reflect God’s glory so all people will know Jesus, lead transformed lives and answer His call to disciple nations.

Our anthem is “Loving the King and Living the Kingdom”.

To this end, AFBC has been a missions minded church from its beginning and is known for its excellent, contemporary worship, practical, yet inspiring Bible teaching, and most of all, the great-hearted, generous people who make AFBC their church home.

Serving as a lighthouse to the community, we provide excellent ministries through our  Arcata Christian School (K-8th grade). A strong college ministry, Solid Rock, serves HSU and College of the Redwoods with fellowship and outreach opportunities. Our debt free facilities provide an excellent environment for ministry to all ages.

We welcome you to join us on Sunday mornings at 10:15 a.m. We are located at 1700 Union Street in Arcata. Quality nursery and Children’s Church is provided by caring and gifted individuals. Please visit our contact page on the web site if we can help you with any specific questions.

STATEMENT OF FAITH:

  • We believe in all of the great Christian doctrines including the Trinity; the Deity of Christ, the forgiveness of sins through faith in Christ and His atoning work on the cross; His resurrection; and His coming again to save His own, to establish His Kingdom, and to judge the world.

  • We believe that the Bible is the true and divinely inspired Word of God, and we preach, teach, and seek to live by its inspiration and under it as our final authority for faith and practice.

  • We honor Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and seek to honor Him through wholehearted worship, Christ-centered living and witness.

  • We believe that Christian ministry is to serve God in worship, to serve the church in love, fellowship, body life and equipping for service, and to serve the world through compassion and witness, all for the glory of God.

  • We emphasize the essential role of the Holy Spirit in empowering and equipping Christians to serve Christ effectively and to build up His body. We believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are for today and that our worship services, ministries, and fellowship gatherings should allow freedom for the Holy Spirit to operate in the context of balance, order, and love.

  • We believe in the ministry of every believer, that every Christian has been called and gifted by the Spirit for active ministry in the body of Christ.

  • We are committed to interdenominational fellowship, recognizing that Christ’s body is made up of all those who are born of His Spirit and committed to His Lordship, and that the unity of Christians is essential if we are to effectively present Christ to the world.

About Our Logo:

The Redwood trees and brown earth emphasize the truth that Jesus is Lord of Creation. Because the earth is the Lord’s we should be good stewards of His creation. (Colossians 1:15-17)

The cross highlights the truth that Jesus, the Son of God, came to earth, died for our sins and is the Savior of the world. (I John 4:13,14)

The rays of light reflect the truth that Jesus is the Light of the World. It also reflects how a new day dawns for those who discover the wonder of the cross. (John 8:12, II Corinthians 5:17)

The path affirms the truth that Jesus is the Way, Truth and Life. It also highlights our spiritual journey, and how only the path that leads to the cross is the path of salvation. (John 14:6, Acts 4:12, Matthew 7:13-14)

The name Arcata First Baptist Church refers to a group of Christians, who together, in biblical community, are walking down the path which leads to the cross, having discovered the wonderful truth that if any man be in Christ he is a new creation, the old things have passed away, and a new day has dawned.
